folded paper star cone

Folded Paper Star Cone

Designed by Kathleen George for Dow Chemical Company

This festive centerpiece is inspired by a paper folding technique which has Dutch origins. Select paper colors and patterns to reveal the mood of the season.

Materials

  • The Dow Chemical Company STYROFOAM 4" x 15" Cone
  • Medium-weight patterned wrapping paper, for enough for seventy-two 2"squares*
  • Yes! Paste**
  • Red wrapping paper, green scrapbooking paper, red acrylic craft paint, coordinating paper, 1/2"-dia. snowflake paper punch, craft pins, small paintbrush, white tacky craft glue, scissors, ruler

*Test the paper to see how it folds. Some wrapping papers leave an unattractive white line when folded; other papers are too thick to fold crisply with ease. You are looking for a paper with an interesting design, in pleasing colors, which folds smoothly and lies flat.

**Available at most local scrapbooking supply stores.

For product information, see sources on page 77 of the February 2008 issue.

Instructions

  1. Wrap the entire Cone in red wrapping paper. Use Yes! Paste and craft pins to attach the paper.
  2. Cut 1/2"-wide strips from the green scrapbooking paper. Divide the Cone into thirds by adhering the green strips up the Cone, 4" apart at the bottom and 1" apart at the top, using the Yes! Paste. You will have to piece the strips. Adhere a 1/2" x 12" strip around the base of the Cone.
  3. Cut six 1/2" x 6" strips of green scrapbooking paper to create bows. Fold over the end of each strip to make a loop. Cross two loops over each other and glue to make a bow. Glue the bows to the bottom of each vertical strip of green on the cone.
  4. Cut out seventy-two 2" squares from the patterned wrapping paper. You will need eight squares to create the star. Place the square pattern side down on the diagonal so that the points are at the top and bottom and either side. Fig. 1
  5. Fold the paper in half vertically to crease the center line. Open the square back up again. Fig. 2
  6. Fold up the sides so that the edges meet the center line and you have formed a kite shape.
    Fig. 3
  7. Flip the paper over and fold the bottom corner up so that it is even with the side points. Fig. 4
  8. Fold eight squares in this manner.
  9. Paint the left side of each folded up point with red paint. This step will accentuate the star shape that will emerge as the eight folded pieces are glued together. Some papers fold in such a way that this effect occurs naturally. Fig. 5
  10. Place a dot of white glue on the right side of the turned up point on the first folded piece. Slide a second folded piece inside the left side of the folded up point and on top of the glued side of the point. Press the two pieces together to secure. Fig. 6
  11. Continue applying glue to the right sides of the points and slipping the next folded piece inside the left side of the point until all eight folded pieces are glued together. A hole is formed in the center. Adjust the pieces so that the hole is round.
  12. Adhere the stars onto the Cone - two rows of three stars centered in the sections between the green strips, the last three alternating front and back, placing two directly on green strip and one centered in the middle of the section on the opposite side.
  13. Punch out snowflakes from the coordinating paper and adhere to fill the empty areas. Glue the center only and gently lift the sides to give the snowflakes a 3-D effect. Adhere a snowflake to the center of each bow.
