Why do any of us collect what we do?
Well, it’s partly because we see something we like and want more of it (what I call “desire”). Other times, it’s something that was simply bestowed upon us and which we feel bound to keep (what I call “happenstance”). Many of my collections began with desire, but there have been quite a few created by happenstance. The numerous jars of buttons I have and hold dear were definitely a result of happenstance and actually started off with one bag of buttons that belonged to my grandmother. She was a gifted
seamstress; I remember her sewing my dresses (along with a smaller version for my doll), curtains, pillows, and
whatever else she felt was needed. She saved everything. Nothing was thrown out until anything of use had been salvaged,
and buttons (in particular) were snipped off shirts, blouses, and sweaters and collected in a canvas bag.
